What are creative specifications?

Every advertising platform, from printed newspapers to online networks, have their own specifications and standards for their content. They include technical, stylistic and editorial guidelines that all advertisers must adhere to so their adverts can be approved and published. Listed below are the specifications for Banners, Video, and Audio for digital-driven ads.

Here are some digital advertising specifications and standards:

  • Image size: For photo ads, the recommended image size is 1080 x 1080 pixels, with a maximum file size of 30 MB. The image aspect ratio should be between 4:5 and 1.91:1.
  • Video ads: In-stream video ads are recommended to be 15–30 seconds long, while out-stream video ads can be 1–120 seconds long. The file type should be MP4 or MOV, with an aspect ratio of 16:9.
  • Ad sizes: The most common ad sizes are 728 x 90 (leaderboard), 300 x 250 (medium rectangle), and 160 x 600 (skyscraper).
  • Audio: For out-stream mobile videos, audio should be muted when the video plays without user interaction.
Digital-drive ad specifications

Ads can be very pretty — but they won’t be effective at driving users to take a desired action unless you have a strategic plan in place. Even if you have the perfect copy and hero image, if it is horizontal when it should be vertical, your ad doesn’t have a chance. Getting the basics of image proportions is critical to the ad’s ability to maximize impact on the platform.

For optimal results on Ad Servers, compressed images for web are preferred:

  • < 80 KB per file is recommended
  • > 100 kb per file could cause under-delivery due to loading times on user’s browsers

Note: Creatives need to be made exactly with the following dimensions set in px (pixels). Deviation from these dimensions will NOT serve. Creatives need to be exact (i.e., not 301 x 250).

We do NOT accept the following file types: .psd (Photoshop document), .ai (Adobe Illustrator) .swf, (flash), or .pict

VIDEO - Below are critical elements to keep in mind when placing video ads.

Pre-Roll and Connected video dimensions are as follows:

400px x 225px, 400px x 300px, 480px x 360px, 1920px x 1080px, 640px x 360px or 1920px x 800px

Pre-Roll and Connected TV video placements with the following supported file types: .mpg or .mp4 or .m4v or .mov or .avi

Video files must be less than or equal to requested duration (i.e. we can bid on a 15 second request with a 10 second video). The standard durations available via our system are: 6 seconds, 15 seconds, 30 seconds, 60 seconds

The maximum supported file size is 100MB. Targeting Smart engineers will encode the video down to a workable file size (if necessary).
